01 Jul Plastic Free July and the Power of Waste Management
Every year, millions of people across the globe unite in Plastic Free July, a powerful movement aiming to curb plastic pollution one simple swap at a time. This one-month movement inspires people to make better choices for our towns, oceans, and communities, with the hope that the habits formed during July become habits for life.
The Significance
Launched by the Plastic Free Foundation, Plastic Free July is a registered charity based in Australia, dedicated to creating a world free of plastic waste. The initiative encourages individuals, families, and businesses to reduce single-use plastic through simple but impactful pledges, whether by avoiding plastic packaging or switching to reusable alternatives.
The scale of the challenge is staggering: only 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled, leaving a tremendous amount to pollute the ecosystem. Plastic Free July directs global attention to this issue and invites everyone to be part of the solution. Already, more than 100 million participants across 190 countries have taken the pledge. You can join the movement too.

Small Changes That Make a Big Impact

How Waste Management Ties into the Movement
The choices we make at home and in our communities ultimately feed into waste systems. To truly combat plastic pollution, we need infrastructure that supports recycling and beyond. This is where Rivenhall IWMF plays a vital role.
Rivenhall IWMF: Turning Waste into Resources
Located near Braintree, Essex, the Rivenhall Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) is a modern solution for sustainable waste management. Designed to process up to 853,000 tonnes of waste annually, Rivenhall diverts waste from landfill and contributes to the production of energy and recycled materials.
Here’s how the facility supports the ethos of Plastic Free July thus far:
Energy-from-Waste (EfW): Instead of letting waste go to landfill, the facility generates enough renewable electricity to power thousands of homes, while minimising emissions and landfill use.
Ash Recycling: Waste ash is recovered and repurposed, including for use in construction applications.
Just as Plastic Free July empowers people to reduce plastic at home, Rivenhall IWMF ensures that the materials which do enter the waste stream are managed responsibly, contributing to renewable energy, reducing landfill, and championing recycling.
Plastic Free July and Waste Management at Rivenhall
Movements like Plastic Free July inspire change at the individual level, showing us how small everyday actions, like refusing a plastic bag or switching to reusable bottles, can add up to a powerful collective impact. But for these changes to truly make a difference, they need to be matched by systems that deal responsibly with the waste we still produce.
That’s where waste management comes in. While our personal choices reduce the amount of plastic entering the system, effective facilities ensure that what remains is processed sustainably, not left to pollute land and oceans.
At Rivenhall IWMF, the two ideas meet. The facility provides the infrastructure that complements personal action: minimising landfill and turning residual waste into renewable energy. In this way, individual efforts and industrial innovation work hand in hand, ensuring that every step we take towards reducing plastic is supported by a waste system built for the future.
