13 Aug Rivenhall IWMF Updates: Our First Essex Waste Delivery and New Operational Status
Indaver is thrilled to announce two exciting developments at Rivenhall IWMF that mark the beginning of a new era in sustainable waste management for Essex. After years of meticulous planning, construction, and collaboration, the site has officially received its first waste delivery on 21st July 2025, followed by the first waste burning on 9th August. We’re now actively transforming Essex’s residual waste into energy, making a tangible contribution to environmental sustainability and the regional circular economy.
A Milestone Years in the Making
If you’ve been following our journey, you’ll know that construction of the Rivenhall Integrated Waste Management Facility began in July 2021, launching a four and half year programme that has transformed the site into a cutting-edge waste-to-energy facility in Essex. During peak construction periods, as many as 850 people were employed on-site, dedicating over one million man-hours to get the facility ready for commissioning.
The facility’s readiness to begin waste processing (ahead of schedule) is a testament to the dedication of the entire team – from engineers to construction workers and now the operational staff who will run the plant moving forward.
“I’m really pleased to be in a position to begin processing waste two months ahead of schedule,” said John Tatton, General Manager of Rivenhall IWMF. This is a major achievement for Indaver, KVI, and everyone involved in the Rivenhall project. Diverting waste from landfill and moving it up the waste hierarchy is key to enabling a circular economy. As a reliable partner to both industry and public authorities for ecologically and economically responsible waste management, Indaver is proud to offer a new solution for the Essex region.”
The First Waste Delivery
On 21st July, Rivenhall IWMF received its first truckload of waste, delivered by Essex-based company Clear-a-Way.This much anticipated first delivery marked the transition from construction to commissioning; a significant step forward for both Indaver and the wider Essex community.
Since then, waste has been delivered gradually, increasing volumes over the coming weeks to build up bunker levels. During the build-up, operational staff have had weeks of intensive training to prepare and fine-tune the facility’s systems in preparation for transition into full-scale waste treatment operations. Eventually, waste deliveries will accumulate to reach the facility’s full intake capacity of nearly 600,000 tonnes per year.

August 9th: All Systems Go
Following a successful commissioning phase, we’re proud to confirm that as of 9th August 2025, the Rivenhall Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility commenced its first waste burning, a major success, signifying our commitment to sustainable waste management for Essex. We expect to be officially fully operational when the plant is handed over in March 2026.
From this point forward, the Rivenhall plant will begin converting residual waste, that would otherwise end up in landfill, into valuable energy to power homes and businesses across the region. This not only reduces the environmental impact of landfill usage but also offers a cleaner, greener alternative to traditional waste disposal methods.
